Before the technician arrives
Limit the damage when it is safe to do so. Stop using fixtures that are backing up. Shut off the closest water valve for an active supply leak.
Clear access to the affected fixture or cleanout. Keep children and pets away from sewage or standing water.
During a sewer backup, additional water can make it worse, so that also means holding off on laundry and the dishwasher until the line is cleared.
